a new mac kind of day
i got the new 15" macbook pro today. one of the new faster ones with iLife '08. i didn't get the glossy screen as I don't want someone messing with what my graphics look like - but I'd have to say that the glossy screens do look great for watching movies.
also saw the new iMac in the shop. how cool is that?
now the laborious task of setting up the new computer.
step 1 - do a clean system install so I can avoid installing all those foreign languages and printer drivers and software trials that I'll never want.....
step 2 - partition hard drive - yes, I still like to do this....
in the meantime, off to the aldgate pub for dinner to celebrate mnaddy's birthday!
I'm looking forward to getting my own MacBook Pro in the next month (including glossy screen!). Then I just have to persuade my wife that the iMac G5 *needs* to be replaced with one of the new 24" ones. Wish me luck! ;-)

Hey Craig - why do you still partition in this age of journalled filesystems?

i think i might get you to bring a copy of ipartition down for inservice so we can un-partition my HD...

By the way, as soon as I've stopped buying pro SLR lenses, a 24" imac is on the budget list... I need that 500gig drive!

sigh... mo iMac here for a while... the swivel dome iMac has been in repair for 2 months... apart from the power supply, he thinks its a 'software problem'.....
partitioning - journalling slows down disk read/writes (good for system disk, not good for AV disk - internal or external), while Unix cleans up the drive, you don't get to defrag according to the way you use it, plus a separate media partition actually helps me as a visible filing draw of what I'm working onor referencing.
it usually doesnt matter unless the video project is getting complicated. plus I'm a but old-fashioned.... mike, you taught me to defrag...
pro SLR lenses... that would be for a digital SLR no doubt... I'd like one of those....

Indeed - the Digital SLR is a thing of great beauty. I bought the much lauded Pentax K10D and some pro Sigma lens gear. Its brilliant. However, now that I've been at it a while, I think I'd prefer a Canon, just for the access to the L series lenses, which are just stunning. Mind you, three grand for an EOS 5D without a lens... the Pentax holds up pretty well on the value for money stakes.

Sounds nice. Look forward to hearing how the MacBook Pro works out. Are you also going to install Boot Camp or similar at some point?
My iBook is dying and one of the things I'd like to have in it's replacement is a dedicated video card, plus the ability to connect into my kids games via the home LAN. Leaves either the MacBookPro (with Boot Camp etc.) or ditching the Mac platform and returning to something Windows-based primarily.
I'd be less of an issue if some of the Mac ports of games (e.g. Age of Empire series) supported playing against PC users on the LAN.
