messing with Tim's head

yeah, in case you don't know, I've been playing with the head of my colleague and friend Tim Hein. It started somehow with a comment of his late last year about liking The Pet Shop Boys. So now Tim gets to appear occasionally in classic album covers... He has tried to get me back a couple of times but I have vastly superior Photoshop skills. Of course, part of the beauty of this is starting with the same photo of him each time... (I now like to call him "the pet shop boy" behind his back... just kidding fatboy...)

I'm taking orders for birthday cards... and yes my college colleagues, I already have ideas for the rest of you...

Abide in Me

Having taken a few photos of our autumn grape vines on my iPhone a couple of days ago using Hipstamatic, I thought I'd turn them into Powerpoint slides for this Sunday's lectionary reading. You're welcome to use them for non-commercial purposes. They're 1024 x 768 pixel JPGs, so if your slides are 800 x 600 you'll need to downsize them. I used a "nice" font (Bickley Script) rather than something funky.... Click on each image for the full-size version, then right-click or control-click to download it.

Hipstamatic Images Vol. 1

I'm in the process of finalising a family cookbook which we'll publish privately through Lulu.com. I wanted to see what their paper, printing and binding quality was, so as a trial I've just published a book of 45 of my photos taken on my iPhone using the Hipstamatic app. The book quality is excellent and the photos don't look too bad!

Photos of food, scenery, wineries, our garden, art exhibitions and other stuff.

Of course this is short-run digital publishing so it isnt cheap. For a hard-cover photo or recipe book, we're talking $25 before you start to add pages. Then its 25c a page. Then you have to pay freight. So the cookbooks won't be cheap, but they will be 'family heirlooms'...

Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with my little example of vanity publishing...

ocean without a shore

when we were in melbourne I spent some time at the national gallery of victoria (NGV)and the australian centre for the moving image (ACMI).The NGV has an installation of bill viola's work 'Ocean without a Shore' running for 12 months. for the uninitiated, bill viola is a world-renowned multimedia, video and installation artist and I plan to reference his work in my PhD thesis.

'ocean without a shore' was created for the 2008 venice bienniale. the piece was originally presented in a centuries old chapel above three altars. at the NGV it is in a darkened room on three walls. each of the three screens features a succession of people who appear and disappear, in ultra-slow motion (as is viola's signature). apparently there are 14 hours of video.

the figures represent ghosts, or the dead, they walk slowly as shadowy figures towards some kind of barrier (which turns out to be a sheet of water - another viola signature). they push through the water and appear in full view, drenched and dripping, gazing in slow motion with varied expression, and then, with individuality, turn and leave.
