the fireworks were great weren't they - we could see them from my bedroom window.

There's so much that's incongruous about the games. i went to the athetics on friday night at the MCG. it was absolutely brilliant - who would have thought? The very best bit was the 3000m steeplechase where the guy who was running last (Fijian?) did the last lap on his own. He got a standing ovation all the way around from the 85000 people there... It felt like everyone there could remember what it's like to come last... and an acknowledgement that we wouldn't have made it around even the first lap...

And then they were describing Sierra Leone on the radio yesterday - world's poorest nation, racked by civil war, famine, corruption, etc. etc... and how most of the athletes from there are orphans, and have no family to return to... i know it's simplistic, but what good's the commonwealth if we can't even work that stuff out...
