i'm leading chapel worship in 2 weeks. if only i had the time to prepare.
I have an idea, namely long tables in a cross shape... four quadrants with a part of holy week in each...
... new messiah (broken hope).... last supper (broken community)... the garden (broken faith)... betrayal (broken allegiance)... still working on it
the idea being that we share a meal. ie. thinking about bringing our college lunch into the chapel so we stay in the space after worship - and giving people middle eastern recipes to choose from to bring for the meal.
jonny's posts have got me thinking about how the communion might be broken...
the people in each quadrant of the tables would be involved in re-presenting that part of the story (ie. reading in parts, but maybe not - still working on this bit), behind them would be something projected (yes I've got some of this worked out - eg. 'saviour' pictures of obama - blogged previously here. obama is a great connection because the world is so hopeful about him (as I am!!). superimpose them on top of the palm branch video that's been free from highwayvideo.com
the bushfires have been so huge here, and being given prayerful pause by cheryl and her network''s worship stuff I am working out what might happen there. i'm pretty sure its a gethsemane thing.. so "ashes" from "our broken garden"'s album seems to be it.. weird
last holy week we used luka bloom's version of U2's "Bad", and benji sang it wonderfully. the easter song that will feature somewhere this year is leonard cohen's "anthem". "there is a crack, a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in." i'd love to get it sung but I'm not sure by whom...
"Anthem"
by Leonard Cohen
The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.
I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.
Ring the bells that still can ring ...
You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
