we awoke to this view of wellington from the copthorne hotel balcony. spent the morning and part of the afternoon at Te Papa, the national museum. such a treasure, and admission is free. apart from the many wonderful exhibits that I'd seen on a previous visit, some new highlights were the giant squid (real, dead, huge... and you should see the stuffed squid toy at the museum shop!), a fantastic interactive media wall where people can search for photos and movies or take their own portraits then add and manipulate them - plus the exhibition of contemporary art from the Venice Biennale.
we flew to christchurch this afternoon. i'm here for mark pierson's "just worship" conference. about 50 people, mainly from NZ. we spent 1/2 driving around the city following the GPS to find the venue which was 2 blocks from where we're staying - on a street that is divided into 4 discontinuous sections in a city with lots of one way streets! the GPS was almost thrown out the window! (bring back GPS "judy" from the north island!)
arrived late for a nice, contemplative, evening worship, featuring this feather movie clip. one prayer response invited people to place a feather above an upward blowing fan as a prayer of hope (simple but gorgeous), and another involved placing a feather in water with candles, stirring it with a stick to express the 'stuckness' in our lives.
so nice to be at a weekend event that I'm not running with almost no people i know. looking forward to the rest of it. i sat there in the silence realising that I'd spent so much of the past week driving from stunning place to stunning place, with barely enough time to stop and appreciate them all. so much looking, not enough stopping to just 'be'. (pretty much the first week of any holiday for me...) since i'm rather 'anti' the tourist thing, it was a bit of a surprise realisation.
so i'm determined in the next nine days to experience the journey as more of a pilgrimage of some kind. i'm not sure sure what yet but i'm looking to this weekend's experience to help me be oriented toward the journey. i may have to give up the internet with its inevitable work intrusions in order to achieve this!
